PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As we move into the second half of Term Three, we continue to focus on our core school values, with a special emphasis on Responsibility. This focus is extending beyond the schoolyard into classroom learning, where students are being encouraged to take ownership of their learning, their actions, and their contributions to our school community.
This term has been packed with exciting events and opportunities:
Reclink Netball Tournament
We are proud of the way our students represented Cosgrove High School in the recent Reclink Netball Tournament. Their teamwork, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship were outstanding, and they wore our school colours with pride.
Book Week Joy and Creativity
Book Week was a huge success, filling the school with colour and excitement! It was wonderful to see so many students dressed as their favourite book characters, and the creativity of staff was on full display through the amazing book-themed door decorations.
Wear It Purple Day
On 29 August, our school community proudly supported Wear It Purple Day, celebrating and standing in solidarity with our LGBTIQA+ students and staff. This day highlighted our commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.
Learning Conversations and Evidence of Learning
Teachers are currently preparing detailed evidence of student learning to share at our upcoming Learning Conversations afternoon on 16 September. These sessions will provide parents and carers with valuable insight into student progress and achievements.
Science Week Excursions
Science Week provided a fantastic opportunity for hands-on learning, with excursions to the Sustainability Centre. These visits allowed students to explore environmental science in action and deepen their understanding of sustainability.
School Redevelopment Progress
Our community continues to adapt incredibly well to the ongoing redevelopment works, which are moving closer to completion. Exciting landscaping is underway both inside the school grounds and at the front of the school, where new bus shelters will soon provide a sheltered gathering space for students before and after school. We are also thrilled to announce the addition of two new small basketball courts—one at the front of the school and another near the canteen. We look forward to welcoming students into these new and improved facilities in 2026!
Cultural Inclusion Program
In partnership with the Migrant Resource Centre, Value Learning, and the Office of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Cosgrove High School has begun a Cultural Inclusion Program. Teachers and representatives from feeder and partner schools attended the first session, and we are excited to involve students in these important conversations early in Term Four.
Looking ahead, there are many events to get excited about:
Scott Roth Visit – 9 September
We are thrilled to welcome Scott Roth, Head Coach of the Tasmania Jack Jumpers, to Cosgrove for a special session with our students.
House Challenge Day – 19 September
Our next House Challenge Day promises a range of fun and engaging activities for students to enjoy while earning points for their Houses.
Halloween Disco – 22 October
Planning is already underway for our Term Four Halloween Disco. Keep an eye out for invitations and details coming home to students soon!
Cosgrove High School continues to thrive thanks to the energy and engagement of our students, staff, and families. Thank you for your support as we work together to make our school a safe, inclusive, and inspiring place to learn.
Cosgrove High School The 2025 School Satisfaction Survey is coming!
We want to hear from you, as input from families is very important to help us inform our school-planning and decision-making. Every year the Department for Education, Children and Young People conducts a School Satisfaction Survey to find out what your child(ren)'s school does well and where it may improve.
We would be grateful if you took part in our online survey about Cosgrove High School.
The survey is open from Monday 25 August 2025 until Friday 19 September 2025 and should take about 5 minutes to complete.
Each family should nominate one person to fill in this survey for their child(ren).
Take the online survey by clicking this Link: https://nam.dcv.ms/5vUHLA0cFf
The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential. All families in this school received the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools. Responses from individuals or small groups will NOT be disclosed to any Department for Education, Children and Young People staff.
Please contact Cosgrove High School if you require any assistance. Thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey.

Redevelopment

Prefect Report
Last week we had our amazing book week activities, including class door decorating, a bear hunt competition, and we finished the week with a parade. This Book Week was the 80th we had at this school, with the theme being Book an Adventure, which all the costumes reflected on Friday.
Throughout week four and even a bit of last week, every class was busy planning and decorating their doors with various book themes. We had many ‘Where’s Wally’ doors, along with many other classic books like ‘The Three Little Pigs’, ‘The Shining’, ‘The Magic School Bus’, ‘Alice In Wonderland’, and many more. These added colour visuals and talking points to our corridors and got our classes talking about all different stories!
We all engaged in the Bear Hunt created and organised by Ange and Emily, where they turned the staff into bears, and with some clues, we had to guess which bear was which member of staff. This proved to be quite challenging as some bears were really difficult to identify!
The parade was such good fun. It was great to see students and staff dressed up in costumes. As part of the parade, students had to explain who their character was, with bonus points if they did the announcement in the role of their character; the outstanding performance, had to go to Sumara! Well done on such a great Gru impersonation!
A big thank you to everyone who dressed up, decorated doors and participated in the adventure of book week! A special thanks also goes to staff who helped organise the events, we are grateful for the time and effort you put in to making the week such a success.
We have had many opportunities to participate in this term; Netball, Tournaments of Minds, Chess and also work based excursions to TasTafe, Mac2 and to Mystate Arena to learn about different roles and different careers. These have been valuable experiences for us to learn about future pathways. We encourage all students to participate in as many opportunities as possible!

Year Seven
Hello everyone, I hope you have all had a great Term 3. So far, we have been learning lots of new things in Year seven. We have covered many new topics and have started to do our assessments.
English
We have been learning about survival stories in English. One of these stories is about Bethany Hamilton who had her arm bitten off by a shark. It is amazing how she survived a shark attack.
Maths
Our focus in Maths this term has been on Patterns and Algebra. We have learnt that some letters have a number value when used in a maths equation.
History
We have been learning about Ancient Egypt in HASS. The people of ancient Egypt lived along the Nile River, built pyramids for their Kings and had slaves.
Science
In Science we have been learning about animals and where they live. We have also been learning about Aboriginal symbols and their heritage.
Art
In Art we have been focusing on drawing and sketching items. Ms Muller has taught us how to shade and how to do this to show depth with our sketching.
HPE
In Health and P.E., we have been focusing on ball sports and team sports. We have been playing Netball, Volleyball, Badminton, Soccer and Basketball. It’s so much fun playing in a team and learning new skills.
We had to run three laps around the school which ended up being about three kilometres. After we finished, we were able to get an ice cream and do other activities.
I really enjoyed HPE this term. It has been fun communicating in team sports with my classmates. –

Year Eight
This term, Year Eight students have been studying Chemistry. They have learnt about the three states of matter—solids, liquids, and gases—and how matter changes between these states through processes like melting and evaporation. They also explored how particles behave differently in each state.
Students also studied atomic structure, discovering the roles of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Using the periodic table, they made models of elements based on their position, helping them understand how elements are organized by their properties.
It’s been an engaging unit that’s built a strong foundation in Chemistry for our Year Eight students.
Ms Mailing

Year Nine
The Year 9 Student Leadership team is excited to announce that they will be hosting a Halloween Disco in Term 4!
As part of their planning, the students have been actively reaching out to local businesses to seek donations for prizes and assistance with decorations to help make the event a fun and memorable experience for everyone.
Stay tuned for more details and thank you in advance to the generous businesses and families supporting this initiative!
We have received donations from the following businesses
Bunnings Glenorchy
New Norfolk Hotel
Salmon Ponds
Kmart New Town
Thank you

Year Ten
This term has seen our transition to Years Eleven and Twelve become more formalised. In our Wellbeing lessons, students have been busily exploring subjects and courses for Years Eleven and Twelve. These plans have moved from draft format, to more finalised. Year Ten wellbeing teachers attended an information session last term at Claremont College and are using the resources, knowledge and information to support Year Ten students in making their choices and looking at how to separate courses into Year Eleven and Year Twelve. We have also been visited by both Elizabeth College and Claremont College staff to introduce themselves and to help answer questions and inquiries from students. Our next phase is to have one on one enrolment meetings with college staff to lock in those choices. We have been pleased to see students engaging with college staff; asking questions, discussing options and being reflective of what their strengths and interests are.
As a cohort, we have been working hard on increasing attendance to school and also engaging with staff and meeting expectations. Our focus areas are uniform, attendance and upholding the school values. It is great to see students in Year Ten wearing their uniform with pride. This is one of the expectations of students outlined in the ‘End of Year Celebration Agreement’ which was sent out to students and families in Term One. Attendance is another focus. Earlier in the term, many Year Ten students were recognised as having ‘outstanding’ attendance (more than 90%) or having ‘Improved attendance’ which was showing growth of attendance form Term One to Term Two. As we move closer to the end of year, and the celebration activities, it is important for students to be meeting the expectations as outlined in this agreement. Students can discuss this with their Wellbeing teacher as a first step.
In our Wellbeing lessons each week, students have been tracking their own attendance and setting goals. This is to help students take responsibility for their learning and allow them to see what their attendance is, how it can be improved and what is working well for them. It has been a useful tool for students to reflect on what is working well for them and what could help them improve their own attendance.
Our Wellbeing Challenge has added an element of competitiveness and also built team work and communication skills each week. We have had general knowledge quizzes, bottle flipping, a maze activity and many more. These activities have been popular with students, and the winning Wellbeing group receives a small prize each week. So far, 10C are our overall champions winning five challenges, 10B have won two and 10A have one won challenge! We look forward to the challenge each week!
We look forward to more work based excursions, completing college enrolments and also finalising our assessments of learning in the remainder of the term!
Hannah Parker.

Reading Room
This term, students have been actively engaged in Readers Theatre—an enriching literacy activity that transforms reading into performance. These short, scripted stories allow students to take turns as narrators and characters, encouraging repeated reading and expressive delivery. Through this process, students develop reading fluency, enhance intonation, and refine vocal expression in a supportive, collaborative setting.
The interactive nature of Readers Theatre fosters confidence and enjoyment, as students immerse themselves in character roles and share laughter with peers. By blending purposeful reading practice with dramatic storytelling, this approach continues to strengthen oral language skills and deepen engagement with text.

Cosgrove High School Brings Stories to Life During Book Week Celebrations
Cosgrove High School was transformed into a vibrant literary wonderland last week as students and staff came together to celebrate Book Week in spectacular fashion. From creative costumes to imaginative classroom doors, the school buzzed with excitement and storytelling spirit.
On Friday, students from Years Seven through Ten took centre stage in the much-anticipated Book Week Parade. Dressed as their favourite characters from classic heroes to modern icons students strutted up onto the stage, showcasing their creativity and love for reading. The parade was a joyful celebration of literature, with teachers joining in the fun, donning costumes that ranged from whimsical to wildly inventive.
One of the standout features of the week was the Book Week Door Competition, which saw classrooms and office doors across the school transformed into portals to beloved books. Staff and students collaborated to decorate their doors with themes inspired by novels, poems, and graphic stories. From enchanted forests to dystopian futures, each door told its own tale, making the school corridors feel like a walk through a living library.
Book Week at Cosgrove High was more than just costumes and competitions it was a celebration of imagination, literacy, and community. In a playful nod to the classic children’s book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, staff members became part of a literary scavenger hunt by having their photos transformed into bear-faced characters. These “bearified” portraits were shared each day to the students with clues to uncover which staff member was hiding behind the bear.
Year Eight students took part in their own adventure, navigating a scavenger hunt through their building. Armed with clues and curiosity, they searched for book-themed images tucked into corners and crevices, decoding riddles and piecing together literary connections. The activity not only tested their reading comprehension and teamwork but also sparked excitement for the stories behind each clue.
With such enthusiastic participation and creative flair, Cosgrove High has set a high bar for future Book Week celebrations. Here's to many more chapters of literary magic!

Fresh from the Garden
A Big Thank You!
We are thrilled to share some wonderful news!
Thanks to the generous donation from Bunnings, our school has received five beautiful fruit trees and compost to kickstart our new orchard garden. Our students enthusiastically planted these on Friday, and we can’t wait to watch them grow and flourish.
A huge thank you to Bunnings for supporting our school's green initiatives and fostering a love for nature among our students. Stay tuned for updates as our orchard blossoms!
Big thanks to Stoneman's Garden Centre for donating a box of plants to our Kitchen Garden Horticulture program!
The peas are flowering and are doing really well. We appreciate your support in helping us teach and inspire our students.

Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
At Cosgrove High School the wellbeing of our students is a top priority. We want to hear directly from our students about how they’re feeling and what’s happening in their lives.
Students in all years will soon be participating in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. This important survey helps us build a clear picture of our students’ current wellbeing and identify ways we can better support them to thrive and engage in learning. The more students who take part, the more meaningful the insights will be.
This survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
Survey Details:
When: 8th September – 19th September
Who: All year groups
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all students. This includes a list of Frequently Asked Questions and a form to return if you do not want your child to participate.
If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact the office on 6271 1111.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Building a Culture of Belonging
Staff at Cosgrove, plus members of DECYP, had our first of five professional learning sessions: ‘Building a Culture of Belonging’.
These sessions will give staff practical tools to help students feel seen, heard and valued. We will listen to students lived experiences and continue to build inclusive practices.
Our first session was delivered by Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) Tasmania and we explored pre and post settlement experiences. It was a great opportunity to work together to build connections and understanding.
We look forward to the next sessions and thank everyone who presented and attended!

Raise Mentoring
For the last ten weeks six students in Year Eight have been participating in the Raise Mentoring Program. Raise Mentoring gets volunteers in from the community to mentor students and help them navigate certain challenges in their life. Students had booklets that they had to work through with their mentor as well as asking them questions and getting help with things like resume writing and job applications. Each session would begin with activities and games with the group, and these helped the mentors and mentees to work on confidence and become familiar with each other. Students then broke up into smaller groups and worked with the mentors. Each time one of the mentors would bring yummy snacks to share with the group. At the end of the 10 weeks, they finished up with a mini graduation ceremony and shared cards thanking the mentors for all their help.
